Summer School: Chapter Twelve is the twelfth episode of the second season of Stargirl, and the twenty-fifth episode overall. This episode aired on October 26, 2021, on The CW.
Synopsis[]
THE GREATER GOOD - With the looming threat of Eclipso hanging over them, Courtney seeks help from the unlikeliest of places. Meanwhile, Mike's search to find Thunderbolt leads him straight to his friend Jakeem, and Pat goes to extreme lengths to protect Rick.
Plot[]
The next day at the Whitmore house, an unaccompanied Buddy tears up the place - chewing up shoes, shredding trash, and even venturing to the basement. He pees on the box containing the cosmic staff. The staff comes to life as it's full healed. Buddy chases it around and then it chases him. Courtney and the others arrive, and find Buddy and the Cosmic Staff. Courtney remarks that the staff is feeling better.
Four Hours Ago
Beth and Jennie enter the cafeteria torn up from the fight a few weeks ago, but don't see Shade despite tracing his energy there with the ring. Using the goggles, Beth spots dark energy residue on the floor on the spot where Cindy disappeared. They figure the ring picked up the residue, and the ring blasts the piece of residue on its own.
The green flame destroys the residue, and Courtney tries to reach Beth over the comms. Beth tells Jennie that Courtney is back in the real world, and the two head to the house.
At the house, Pat finds McNider an old suit to wear instead of his Dr. Mid-Nite costume. McNider says that he's comfortable in a suit, and the blind man puts on his goggles so that he can see. He's not interested in Pat's apologies, and says that they should focus on stopping Eclipso. McNider figures that Eclipso's ultimate goal is power, and explains that Eclipso is vulnerable because he doesn't have a host or the diamond. They figure that someone who channels hope and wields light, like Courtney, can destroy Eclipso.
Pat tells McNider that the Staff has apparently made a full recovery, but isn't sure if Jennie is ready. When Pat says that he isn't sure if the other kids are ready, McNider says that Beth is.
Cindy looks around the house, and then watches Barbara and Courtney hug. When they see Cindy watching, Courtney pulls away and tells Cindy that she'd better not trying. Cindy says that she'll be glad to leave Blue Valley once Eclipso defeats, and admits that taking the diamond was a mistake. Barbara agrees and tells Cindy not to try any trouble.
Beth and Jennie arrive and Beth hugs Courtney. Courtney explains that Cindy is helping them, and Beth points out that Cindy is evil. Cindy says that she's offering a truce until Eclipso is defeated. Jennie tells them that she's tired. McNider comes in and says that it's nice to finally meet Beth. Beth smiles and agrees.
Beth and McNider talk, and McNider says that it's safer that she keeps her goggles and he has his own that are connected to his "incognito" dark glasses. She uses her goggles to project an image of the residue, and McNider figures that it's afterbirth from the portal Eclipso opened to the Shadowlands. They combine their goggles and cut the time the goggles take to triangulate Eclipso's location from eight hours to four.
As Beth and McNider bond, Barbara watches from the next room and smiles. Courtney tells Pat that is right, and the two of them watch Cindy and Barbara joins them. Cindy is eating a sandwich and compliments Barbara's cooking, and Courtney tells Pat that she'll talk to Yolanda while Pat sees what he can do to get Rick out of jail. Pat figures that Mike is "chasing the lightning".
The radio reports giant food appearing around town. Meanwhile, Mike rides his bike around town and looks for Jakeem. He finds a discarded newspaper bag belonging to Jakeem discarded in some bushes nearby.
At the house, Jennienie sits on Courtney's bed. Barbara comes in and brings Jennie some food, and tells her that she needs some rest so she can help. The older woman tells Jennienie to save up her energy because Pat said the ring takes a lot out of its user, and Jennie agrees. Once Barbara leaves, Jennie looks at the ring.
Courtney finds Yolanda at the church. Yolanda doesn't want to talk to Courtney, and Courtney says that the original JSA killed Bruce Gordon. She explains that the first Wildcat made the same mistake and had to live with the guilt. Courtney tells Yolanda that she wanted her friend to know she wasn't alone, and she and the others need Yolanda. Yolanda says that none of it makes anything better, and she won't put on the Wildcat costume because it's the costume of a murderer. As Yolanda walks away, Cindy watches them from hiding.
Pat goes to the hospital and talks to the injured Matt, introducing himself and saying that he's a friend of Rick. Matt doesn't respond, and Pat says that Rick is a good kid and figures Matt knows that as well. He asks Matt to drop the charges against Rick, and going to jail could ruin Rick's life before it gets started. Pat also says that it might not make town, but everyone in town could suffer if Rick doesn't get Matt's forgiveness. Matt is too crippled to speak, but writes down that Pat can go to hell.
Sitting down, Pat tells Matt that Rick's parents asked Matt to look out for Rick, but Matt did the opposite. Matt doesn't respond, and Pat tells him that he has a talent for finding people weaker than he is and taking advantage of them. Pat tells Matt that he's a bad guy and closes the drapes. He says that he has some bad in him, and Matt tries to call for help but can't.
Mike finds Jakeem standing on a yard look up at the sky. Mike asks where the Thunderbolt is, and Jakeem explains that he was hungry and wished for food, and then wishes he could leave and his bike flew. Jakeem says that he was still hungry and wishes for Chinese food, and the Thunderbolt has been gone for three or four hours. Mike figures the Thunderbolt went to China, and tells Jakeem that they need the Thunderbolt back, and asks if Jakeem has heard of the JSA.
Barbara is in the kitchen, and sees shadows moving. Courtney returns home and tells Barbara that Yolanda isn't coming back. She then tells Barbara that she saw her in the Shadowlands, and the shadow version of Barbara said some things that she can't unhear. Barbara says that it wasn't her, and Courtney asks Barbara if it was hard raising Courtney by herself. Her mother says that it was hard being a single mother, and none of the things she could have done matched what Courtney brought into her life. Barbara figures that Courtney is the only one who can stop Eclipso. Courtney says that he misses her best friend, and Barbara hugs her.
Cindy goes to Yolanda's room and tells her not to come back because they don't need any weak links. Yolanda wonders what she means, and Cindy says that her and Courtney are allies against Eclipso. Cindy says that she never thought the brightest student in class could go so fall. She tells Yolanda that she was the one who sent Yolanda's photo to the townspeople, not Henry. Yolanda's mother calls to her, and when Yolanda turns back, Cindy is gone.
Mike and Jakeem go to Jakeem's bedroom, and Mike says that he needs the pen back and didn't mean to give it up. When he says that he just wished it would be in better hands, Jakeem wonders how he's "better hands". Mike figures the Thunderbolt made a mistake, but then admits that Jakeem is better than him. Jakeem says that the Thunderbolt is about more than wishes, and he hasn't had friends to hang out in forever.
Mike warns that the pen comes with responsibility, and if Jakeem is going to keep it, he has to help save the world. Jakeem's sister Jenny comes to the door and says that it's Jakeem's turn to the dishes, but he has to save the world. She threatens to tell their parents of his refusal until he finally concedes. She calls them losers and leaves. Jakeem asks Mike to help him do the dishes before they leave.
Matt drops the charges. When Rick is released, Pat is outside with his car and tells Rick that he thought he might need a ride. Pat claims he has no idea why Matt dropped the charges, and Rick gets in the car with him.
Courtney is the basement, encouraging the Staff, when Yolanda comes in and warns Courtney that Cindy can't be trusted. Yolanda says that she's only back to protect people from Cindy, and once Cindy is gone, so is she. She glares at Courtney and then asks where her suit is.
Jennie is sleeping, and having a nightmare of Bruce saying that he can see her. The ring glows, and Jennie writhes in pain with Eclipso's voice in her head.
That night, Cindy is on the house's porch. Courtney comes out and figures that Cindy played Yolanda to get her back. Cindy readily agrees, and says that Courtney had better embrace her dark side just like Yolanda does... and the JSA did. The villainess says that you have to be bad to defeat evil.
Bruce torments Jennie with visions of the others, dead, and the ring glows as it responds to Jennie's emotions.
Pat goes to the garage with Rick, and Rick goes through his father's notebook with notes about the Hourglass. Pat watches him.
Mike and Jakeem do the dishes and are just finishing up when Jenny saunters over, putting an entire stack in the sink. Annoyed, Mike begins to wash a bowl while Jakeem dries the cleaned ones.
In the Whitmore basement, Yolanda takes out the Wildcat costume. Meanwhile, Courtney takes out the Staff.
On the porch, Cindy calls someone and says they all need to come back to Blue Valley.
Beth and McNider go to American Dream, where the JSA mainframe is being secretly kept. She figures that they need more computing power to find Eclipso. Bruce is there, and the goggles let her see the boy is actually Eclipso. McNider approaches Bruce, who says that he hopes McNider isn't still mad at him for killing his daughter. When Beth says that she summoned the others, Bruce says that he can only find the darkness within Courtney if they're all there.
Jennie sees, in her nightmare, that Courtney is the one who killed the others. Bruce says that soon he will feed on the entire world, and become their god. In Jennie's vision, Courtney reveals that she has been possessed by Eclipso and has overpowered everyone- from her loving stepfather, to her stepbrother, mother and best friends alone; wielding the Cosmic Staff's intensely powerful cosmic light gradually overshadowed by Eclipso's own evil shadows. Horrified at probably losing her new friend to a demonic entity of such evil power, Jennie awakens screaming.

Notes and Trivia[]
- One week has passed since the events of "Summer School: Chapter Six".
- Eclipso's overall plan is revealed in this episode. He wants to corrupt Courtney and take the light from her so he can rule as a god who is no longer weakened by light.
- Yolanda finally learns that Cindy is the one who leaked her photos, not Henry.
- Mike tells Jakeem about the JSA and their fight against Eclipso. He also accepts that Jakeem wants to keep the Thunderbolt, though he warns Jakeem that he has to be prepared for the responsibility that comes with it.
- The shadows that Barbara saw moving around the kitchen resembled the Shade, hinting he could still somehow be alive.
- The Cosmic Staff finally heals after six episodes of being dormant. Despite the staff's regenerative properties and newfound energy, it is only seen on-screen once when it plays with Buddy.
- Beth and Dr. McNider meet for the first time and seem to share the alias of Dr. Mid-Nite.
- Yolanda rejoins the JSA for the fight against Eclipso, but makes it clear that she isn't returning.
- Rick is released from prison when Matt drops the charges following a confrontation with Pat.
- The opening scene was meant to subliminally tell the viewer that the show is coming out of the dark and scary moments. They also wanted to show what the Cosmic Staff did when no one is home.
- The scene where Jennie and Courtney find the residue was originally going to be in 2x11 as a non-flashback moment, but it broke up the flow of the episode. They moved the scene to the flashback in 2x12.
- Cindy stole the phone from Henry in 1x04 so she has the photos to send out to everyone. However, Henry was still showing his friends the photographs. There's a moment in 1x04 where he's surprised at what's happening before he succumbs to peer pressure.
- King Orba was brought to the writers attention by Luke Wilson, and they didn't plan for the character to be so prominent, but just gradually got there.
- Pat's scene is meant to be ambiguous for each viewer to draw their own conclusions to how he convinced Matt to drop the charges.
- The writers refer to characters infected by Eclipso as being "eclipsed".
- Henry King Sr./Brainwave, appears briefly as archive footage during th flashbacks when Yolanda Montez briefly fought an illusion of him in the church during Summer School: Chapter Seven.
