Season 2 (titled Stargirl: Summer School) is the second season of Stargirl. It premiered on The CW on August 10 and concluded on November 2, 2021 with a total of thirteen consecutive episodes

Synopsis

The CW drama series DC’S STARGIRL follows high school sophomore Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger) and her stepfather Pat Dugan (Luke Wilson) as she leads an unlikely group of young heroes to take on the legacy of DC’s very first superhero team, the Justice Society of America. In the thrilling second season, Courtney and her friends take on one of the most frightening adversaries in DC’s mythology – the dark entity of corruption known as Eclipso.

Notes and Trivia

  • On Monday, July 6, 2020, it was announced that Stargirl had been renewed for a second season. However, starting with this season, it airs exclusively on The CW.[5]
    • It adheres to the traditional CW broadcast in that it is available to stream free the next day after its premiere on the CW channel.
    • Due to the official move, DC Universe wouldn't have aired the second season on its streaming platform. However, this became moot when it converted to a comics only service, with the television shows and movies being moved to HBO Max.
  • Production for the season didn't begin until 2021.[6]
  • On July 6, 2020, Yvette Monreal and graphic designer Shawn, assured fans that Geoff Johns had made the move to the CW as well and wasn't leaving the project.[7]
  • The show's production is not moving to Canada. This was a topic of debate due to other CW superhero shows filming in Vancouver.[8]
    • It was also confirmed that the series would still shoot in Atlanta, so there aren't cast changes that weren't already in place.[9]
  • On July 7, 2020, it was confirmed that the same writing team would carry over to the CW, making The CW just a platform for the show and not in charge of creative directions.[10] In fact, the move would not result in any character or story changes.[11]
    • In addition, it was stated that the second seasons of shows are generally cheaper to produce than the first seasons. Thus, the cinematic quality remained the same because Stargirl is able to look this way due to creative choices, not budget. Cameras and lights cost the same, they’re just used differently.[12]
  • Initially, it was reported that a Stargirl panel would take place on Saturday, August 22, 2020, from 6:45 PM to 7:20 PM in the WatchVerse - Athena of the DC FandDome.[13]
    • However, as of August. 19, 2020 DC Fandome has been split into two days. The first one being labeled the Hall of Heroes and taking place on August 22, 2020. But the next one was on September 12, 2020. Stargirl was one of the panels moved to this later date, but this means that fans can now watch the panel anytime within those 24 hours. As opposed to the Hall of Heroes where you have to watch it at a specific time or encore time. [14]
  • Mark Ashworth teased that filming might start in October of 2020, with the series airing on time in 2021.
  • Filming officially started on October 22, 2020.
  • Lea Thompson returned to direct an episode of the season. She previously directed the Season 1 episode, "Shiv Part One".
  • Hunter Sansone officially wrapped filming for Season 2 on March 24, 2021.[15]
  • Cameron Gellman officially wrapped filming for Season 2 on March 29, 2021.
  • Pinar Toprak began score production on March 12, 2021. She worked with a new team at the Sony Pictures scoring stage.[16]
  • The season finale, 2x13, was directed by Greg Beeman.
  • Brec Bassinger was able to wrap filming for the season early, with her wrapping on April 2, 2021.
    • This information came with a claim that the season had wrapped, but was debunked by graphic designer Shawn McBee, who confirmed that filming would continue that Monday, April 5, 2021.
  • Joy Osmanski arrived for her final days of filming on April 5, 2021.
  • Trae Romano, Nick Tarabay, and Ashley Winfrey wrapped filming on April 7, 2021.[17][18][19] Yvette Monreal and her stunt double, Kiara O'Conner, wrapped filming in the later hours of April 7, 2021.[20]
  • Philonese West serves as the head of the hair department for the second season of Stargirl. She notably styles Brec Bassinger, Meg DeLacy, Yvette Monreal, Anjelika Washington, Trae Romano, and Cameron Gellman.
  • When Brec Bassinger, Cameron Gellman, and Anjelika Washington went back to shooting after the COVID-19 shutdown, their respective Stargirl, Hourman, Dr. Mid-Nite suits didn't fit, so the costume designer LJ Shannon let out some of the fabric. They found it refreshing that no one judged them or pressured them, but instead, praised them for looking great and being healthy.[21]
    • Additionally, the Dr. Mid-Nite cowl was loosened so Anj wouldn't have the half-moon imprint on her forehead this season. The Stargirl turtleneck was let out to reduce the bruising that Brec was getting from last season, while Hourman's cape was trimmed to lessen the tripping that kept happening.[22]
    • Yvette Monreal revealed that Wildcat's costume has tiny paw prints in the fabric that she adores.[23]
  • Yvette Monreal, Cameron Gellman, Hunter Sansone, Meg DeLacy and Nick Tarabay are only credited for their respective episode appearances.
  • This is the first season to feature Nick Tarabay as a series regular.
  • This season celebrates the fourth of July, a holiday that wasn't celebrated in Season 1. Moreover, Beth Chapel turns sixteen off-screen, as her birthday isn't celebrated but alluded to.
  • The WB archives department requested a litany of items after the series ended, with the Eclipso toast being one of the props. The prop was a real piece of toast.[24]

Spoilers

  • According to Neil Jackson, The Shade plays a role in the second season, saying "we have big plans for [him]". The character was briefly seen in the pilot episode, "Stargirl", and had a brief cameo in a post-credits scene in the Season 1 finale, "Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. Part Two".[25]
  • Geoff Johns confirmed that both Henry King Jr. (Jake Austin Walker) and Henry King Sr. (Christopher James Baker) are dead and won't be returning for Season 2.[26]
  • Yolanda's decision to kill Brainwave will play a large role in her storyline for Season 2. While Yolanda is spiraling down, Rick is in a state of peace having avenged his parents.[27]
    • Also teased during the panel was a storyline involving Monreal’s Yolanda, who finds herself haunted by some of the major events of Season 1. “That’s a big story, her dealing with what she did, what happened with Henry and what she did with Brainwave,” the creator said. “It’s actually her entire story [throughout] Season 2.”[28]
  • The surviving ISA villains' agenda will be explored. Geoff Johns stated, "each one of the villains certainly has their own agenda. We’ll see a little bit more of what the surviving villains wanted, and want still, in Season 2."[27]
  • Geoff Johns teased Eclipso, saying that he "embodies darkness and corruption". He also confirmed that The Shade was the character teased at the end of the season. However, there are other villains that they haven't hinted at yet.[27]
  • Meg DeLacy claimed that Cindy/Shiv "no longer has any kind of authority in her way" going into Season 2 with the absence of her parents.[29]
    • She also spoke on Shiv's involvement with Eclipso, saying, "Her summoning of Eclipso this next season is going to be epic. And it will involve everyone. Cindy loves pretty things and the diamond sure is beautiful, but I genuinely wonder if she really knows who she’s dealing with".
  • Justin's indestructible armor might appear in Season 2.
  • Solomon Grundy's run on the show isn't finished and he will appear again at some point in Season 2.[30]
  • Dr. Mid-Nite's owl Hootie will return.[30]
  • Geoff Johns has plans for the infamous pink pen that Courtney disregards in Season 1, but wants the show to do justice to established heroes already in the mix. He said, "we’ll definitely be playing with things like the pink pen in Season 2."[31]
  • In conversation with his cast, Johns went on to tease storylines involving other supporting characters, including medical pioneer Dr. Mid-Nite (Henry Thomas) and Sylvester Pemberton (Joel McHale). “[In Season 2, Pemberton] is back,” Johns said.[28]
    • “What that means, and how and why, you’ll start to get an inkling of that in the first episode of Season 2.”[28]
  • It was revealed through Brec's Instagram story that Beth's goggles do get fixed at some point in the series.
  • Episode nine is a pivotal flashback episode that features John Wesley Shipp as Jay Garrick.
  • Anjelika Washington read the season finale script on March 17, 2021. She described it as, "it is sooooo good. Incredible! On the edge of my seat the whole time! I’m clearly bias but I think our show just gets better and better!".[32]
  • Anjelika Washington did an interview with Starry Magazine where she talked about the second season.
    • Beth has a lot of personal growth this season, which I’m really excited for everyone to see!
    • When asked what it's like playing a character with two identities she said, "For Beth, she is more like me as a person. But when Beth puts on her goggles and becomes Dr. Mid-Nite, I get to become even more tech savvy and focused and truly apart of the Justice Society of America."[33]
  • In an exclusive interview, Joy Osmanski revealed that Season 2 is genuinely scary and darker than Season 1. She said, "Season two, it just gets a lot darker, which is such a fun thing for a show to have an opportunity to do, and I will say that the evil forces at work are genuinely scary, like, my children will not be coming anywhere near season two. It's scary."[34]
    • As previously discussed, the threat this season is Eclipso and his genuine desire to feed off the darkness of humanity. Geoff Johns explained it as, "It's such a different, darker, scarier threat because the threat is... Cindy is one thing, and she's got the Black Diamond and were obviously going to explore that. But the thing inside is, this entity that's trapped, this ancient being that feeds off humanity's own sins and grief and fear and darkness is trapped in this Black Diamond and has been there for a long, long time and is aching to do what he does and feed off the darkness within humanity."[34]
    • Geoff further teased how dark the season truly is in a separate interview saying, "There's these colliding ideologies and powers and drives that really help generate strong emotional stories, that challenge each of our characters individually," he further added, "That's what Eclipso does best. He makes things very personal. He turns over rocks that you might not want him to turn over."
    • Brec Bassinger added to that extent saying, "But the Shade and Eclipso, they have this darkness among them that I think is very different than the ISA. It's a different type of evil that Courtney hasn't experienced yet."
  • Season 2 will focus on the two major artifacts Courtney stole from the JSA headquarters: Johnny Thunder's pink pen and Alan Scott's lantern.[35]
    • This is the first ever live action incarnation of the Thunderbolt, and the first time that the lantern is seen in on television.
  • Geoff Johns teased that where Jade goes, her brother Obsidian isn't too far behind.[35]
  • Film inspirations for this season included Nightmare on Elm Street and IT, according to Stargirl Podcast.
  • Mike goes through a journey of wanting to be involved in the JSA despite Pat's resistance.[36]
  • Cindy plans to do recruiting of her own this season to find a team for herself. She also drops out of BVHS.[37]
  • Courtney failed some of her classes so she is placed into Summer School.
  • Brec Bassinger, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, teased that the first six episodes " feel like it's going one direction" then the last part of the season takes a turn.[38]
  • Courtney and Barbara's relationship is stronger this season now that Barbara knows about Courtney's antics as Stargirl[38]
  • Courtney is very intimidated by Jennie as she's the daughter of Green Lantern, leading her to be jealous and have to navigate those feelings while being the leader of the JSA.[38]
  • Brec teased that Stargirl and Starman's first meeting will have a long conversation about the Cosmic Staff as they both wonder if the staff will work for them.[38]
  • On July 7, 2021, TVLine released five first look photos of Season 2. While they were classified as photos from the premiere, many of them were from the following episodes, "Summer School: Chapter Two" and "Summer School: Chapter Three". They also released captions for the photos that detailed what was happening in each one.
    • Courtney’s stepdad Pat (Luke Wilson), seen here talking to Green Lantern’s daughter Jenny, finds himself having to catch Courtney & Co. up on several pieces of OG JSA lore — few if any of them falling under the category of “good news.” Has Pat been sugarcoating a particular event from the superhero group’s illustrious past?
    • Jonathan Cake (The Affair, Doll & Em) is downright (and very entertainingly) debonair as ISA alum Richard Swift aka The Shade, though his civility may prove to have its limits when one of the kids acts too brashly. Swift’s first stop when we see him is Barbara’s office at the American Dream Corporation — but to what end?
    • The JSA is spoiling for a fight when they track down The Shade — though the mood soon enough cools down. Will a spot of tea convince them to stand down and, as Swift nicely requests, “stay out of my way,” so that he can pursue a hidden agenda?
  • On August 9, 2021, the Geena Institute on Gender In Media partnered with The CW and WBTV to host a live Q&A session with the women of Stargirl. In attendance were Brec Bassinger, Anjelika Washington, Yvette Monreal, Meg DeLacy, and Amy Smart. Before the Q&A, viewers had a chance to watch the first episode, "Summer School: Chapter One" but were asked not to share any of the information gathered in the episode.
