Decades Ago
A man presents the award for Best Actress to Dolores Winters for "Remembering to Forget". She crosses the stage, takes the award, and thanks Mr. Colman, who congratulates her on the win. She turns to the crowd. She doesn't know how to express her gratitude or how this even happened, really, but here the award is in her hand. She jokes that it's heavier than she imagined, making the crowd laugh. As actors, they are called upon to lose themselves in a role, and she could not have dreamed for a better character to become lost in. She thanks them and loves them all. The clapping echoes through the room and into a house, where Dolores pours the last of her alcohol into a glass. She shoves the bottle back in the ice bucket.
She walks across the room proudly to her trophy. She looks at her reflection and muses that she did it. A man suddenly arrives, praising Dolores for it's quite a triumph. His presence surprises her, as the party is long over and everyone has gone home. She thinks he should leave, but he was hoping they could talk. She has a friend on their way who will be here any minute. He's madly in love with her. She laughs as he's drunk, telling him to go home. He refuses to waver in his proclamation. When he looks into her eyes, he sees an actor, always acting. Even when the camera aren't rolling he sees a woman hiding, pretending to be something she's not. But he won't judge her. He begs her to show him who she truly is. She picks up the trophy and smashes it over his head. He crawls away in fear. She shakes her head as he really saw her in here, which is unfortunate. She lets out a shout and leaps onto his body, attacking him mercilessly with the trophy, bashing his head in. She growls over his body, smiling as she stands.
A voice behind her tells her she dropped her trophy. She smirks to Dr. Ito that he's late. He gives her a handkerchief that she uses to dab the blood splatters on her face. He asks who the man was. She dismisses it as someone who was getting too close. Like the Justice Society is. They picked up on her trail again. She needs a new body, which makes Ito chuckle. Given the JSA and their inevitable confrontation, he's been making a few improvements of his own. He shows her his arm, which is beginning to show green reptilian scales. She notes his intent on earning his name, Dragon King. He could do the same for her, but she has another idea in mind. She gives him a flier for "Greatest Adventure Congo Bill Captures Fabled Albino Gorilla". A body powerful enough to destroy the entire JSA after a few modifications, of course. He thinks it's an intriguing choice and is almost jealous. She looks at the scars on her scalp in the mirror, remarking this will be fun.
Present Day
Pat walks into Courtney's room and finds her sitting at her window seat. She can't stop thinking about Artemis and how alone she is. Sylvester wanting to take the staff and taking on Icicle himself - there's so much wrong with that. Pat agrees but Sylvester still thinks Icicle is his fight. Barbara enters the room, remarking it's everyone's fight. She doesn't care what Jordan says about wanting peace. He didn't kill the Crocks out of self-defense and needs to be stopped. Pat agrees with her.
Pat and Courtney head to the basement where they find Starman's suit on the bed and Cosmo in its case. Pat finds a note that says he has a few things to do but will be back soon. She remarks they have to find him.
Across town at Ripped City, Artemis dons her suit as she closes the blinds. She stands in the gym for a moment then picks up a pair of boxing gloves, holding them to her torso. She takes a metal bat out of her backpack and tightens her grip. She stares in the mirror as she wields it. Sylvester calls out from behind her. She asks what he wants, and he's just seeing how she's holding up. He asks what she's planning here. She's going to kill Jordan Mahkent. He knows every fiber in her being wants to find that Nordic freak and smash the smug look off his face. But there's a future her parents wanted for her, and it's not prison. If she wants to honor her parents, she should go to college and be the star they raised her to be. She's mad Jordan Mahkent just gets a pass. Hell no, he's going to kill Jordan for her.
Across Blue Valley in West Farms, Rick stands in the bathroom of his house. He breathes heavily as he clutches the hourglass. He takes it off and immediately starts experiencing side effects. The room around him blurs as waves of pain wash over him. His vision flashes then goes red. He cripples over and groans in pain, clutching his side as he stumbles back to the sink. He can barely breathe as he pulls the hourglass back on. Rick splashes his face with water as he pants, everything going dark until the power of the hourglass restores his strength. He looks up in the mirror, wheezing, letting out an shout. His phone buzzes with a call from Beth.
Beth ends her call to Rick and unplugs the goggles, turning to Yolanda. She still can't reach Rick, which Yolanda sarcastically calls a shocker. She asks for any update on that creature, but there isn't one yet. Sylvester walks into The Pit Stop asking for updates. Beth has been tapping into the satellite feeds to search the woods around Blue Valley for the Ultra-Humanite. But now that he's burned down the barn, she thinks he's taken shelter somewhere new. That's his bad, and he asks about Rick, who still isn't answering anyone's calls. Yolanda asks about Courtney, but he didn't tell her they were meeting because she already knows the plan. He's going to face Icicle himself. Yolanda wants to come with him but he refuses. Jordan's stronger now which means he's too dangerous. Yolanda reasons that with Cameron and his crazy grandparents, Jordan won't be alone. Sylvester knows he will, since he dropped a bug in the Mahkents' living room when he and Pat were there. Cameron and his grandparents are going to a vigil tonight for his art teacher, Mr. Deisinger. Apparently, he's been missing for days. The girls questions what happened. Sylvester is guessing it's not good, since the Mahkents and the Ultra-Humanite are running around. But this means Jordan Mahkent will be home alone tonight, until he shows up for their little chat. Yolanda asks if he's sure he doesn't want their help, and he does, actually. He walks to the S.T.R.I.P.E. armor, looking to the girls. When the JSA died, they left family members behind. Sandman has a nephew, The Atom a son, Green Lantern's kids, Jennie and her brother. But there are other JSA members whose bloodlines died that night. He turns to look up at the armor. Heroes like him who had no families to pass their legacies onto. Mr. Terrific, Dr. Fate, The Spectre, Flash, and others who shouldn't be forgotten. He looks to the girls as he's asking both of them, when this is all over, to go find someone like themselves, someone worthy of taking one of these mantles on for their own. To keep his friends' legacies alive. Beth remarks he's talking to them like they're never gonna see him again. He smiles for her not to be silly. He'll catch up with them later. He leaves the Pit Stop as the girls look after him then to one another.
Underneath the Burman house, the Young All-Stars enter the ISA's former headquarters. Mike thinks it's awesome. He asks if the ISA just sat around looking at a painting of themselves. He's not sure if they want to use this for the Young All-Stars HQ, as it's pretty cold down there for a reptile. No offense to Shiv. Jakeem asks what's happening to her and she shakes her head. He only wants to help as they're a team now, and that's what teammates do. Her dad experimented on her for her entire life. He put metal shivs in her arms and pumped her so full of chemicals her hair turned white. She thinks her father did something else to her, something that lay dormant until she came back from The Shadowlands. Mike asks if it hurts, and it does, sometimes. Jakeem summarizes that she took The Gambler's laptop too look for her dads hidden labs. She did, but she searched through all the labs she could find, hoping one might have answers on how to reverse this. Jakeem has an idea, taking out Thunderbolt. He's going to wish for something. Mike grabs him and shakes him a little, telling the madman to wait. He should write it down first, think it through. Jakeem knows what he's doing and tells Mike not to embarrass him in front of her. He turns back to Cindy and wishes that Thunderbolt would take him, Mike, and Cindy to the labs that has what they're looking for. Thunderbolt sparks to life and zaps them away.
Cameron paces in his room holding his phone. He sets it down on the end table and paces more. He picks it back up, about to check it when Jordan walks in. Cameron sits on the bed - Courtney still hasn't called or texted him back. Jordan knows that whatever's going on, she cares about him, advising him to give her some time. Cameron's doesn't think anything they say is going to change her mind. Somehow, they have to prove his intentions are good. Jordan brings up the teacher who has gone missing, Mr. Deisinger. He may have fallen prey to the Ultra-Humanite, which shocks Cameron, who becomes emotional. The police thought he might have had another psychotic break to wandered off. He asks his dad if he thinks Deisinger could be dead, and Jordan solemnly nods. He has an idea to go after the Ultra-Humanite and bring him in himself. He asks if that might be enough.
Pat jogs down the steps to the basement where Sylvester is waiting, dressed as Starman. Sylvester notices Courtney took the staff. Pat explains she went looking for him, and ignores his friend's question on when she'll be back. They decided they're not going to let him go alone. He's tried to be diplomatic, but it's not Pat's decision to make, it's his. Pat argues that Jordan's more powerful than ever, as Beth still doesn't know what Jordan did with the Crocks. With all due respect to the dead, Sylvester's not the Crocks. He can protect himself, he shouldn't even have to say that. Pat states he needs their help. Sylvester angrily swipes everything off the table. He doesn't want their help. Sylvester cruelly asks if he has to spell it out for him. Just look at him, he put a bunch of kids in harm's way to make himself feel important. Pat knows that's just not true, but Sylvester argues that it is. The only reason they respect Pat is because they weren't there to see what an ineffectual loser Stripesy really was. He was a laughingstock, the joke of the entire JSA. Pat, hurt by the words, wonders why he's saying this to him. Sylvester's tried to let this go, but he can't. He steps closer to Pat. The hard truth is that the night the JSA went up against the ISA, Pat wouldn't stop calling Sylvester on the radio. Then he came back when Starman ordered him to stay away. Pat distracted him during the most important fight of his life and got him killed. He shoves Pat as emphasis. Sylvester's not gonna let it happen again. Stripesy's no hero - not then and not now. He's just a sidekick. Pat looks up at his best friends face, grimacing in pain.
Sylvester stalks out of the basement and finds Courtney by the door. She heard them down there, all of it. He coldly tells her that it is what it is. Courtney steps closer to him. Since the day she found the Staff, he's been her hero. She nervously admits that she even thought he was her father for a while. But when Brainwave came after her, it was Pat who saved her. And when Cindy hurt her, it was Pat who got her to the hospital. When her dad came to take the locket and she was absolutely crushed, Pat was there for her too. He's been there for her every time she's ever needed him. She emotionally tells Sylvester that's Starman's not her hero. Pat Dugan is her hero. She was so disappointed when she found out he wasn't her father. But she thanks God every day that Pat is. Sylvester doesn't acknowledge her comments. He just needs the staff. She tearfully holds her ground, as she's not giving it to him. He holds out his hand and the staff whirls to life, flying into his grasp. She looks up astonished and tries to pull Cosmo back, but Sylvester tells it no and to stay. She might have swayed the staff to herself before, but deep down, she knows it belongs to him. She's not worthy of it. She looks at him in shock. He'll be back when he takes care of Icicle. She tells him to stop but he barely apologizes as he leaves the house, slamming the door behind him.
Pat, Courtney, Barbara, Beth, and Yolanda convene at the table. Barbara asks how he took the staff from her. He asked Cosmo to come to him and she couldn't do anything about it. Yolanda wonders why it didn't come back. Courtney tearfully thinks it's because she's not Starman. Pat's going to go and get S.T.R.I.P.E. to try and intercept Sylvester before he gets to Jordan's. Beth says they need Rick and he needs their. Pat tells them to go talk to him and he'll check in later. He puts a hand on Courtney's shoulder, as he's really sorry. She tells him he didn't do anything wrong, and he leaves. She puts her head in her hand.
The Young All-Stars navigate the underground tunnels where they're headed to place to "find what they're looking for". Mike asks what they're looking for, which Jakeem answers is a cure. Thunderbolt explains that Cindy Burman was, but Jakeem made the wish and was looking to impress her. So ta-da, here's his chance. Mike asks what that means but Thunderbolt refuses to answer. Mike tells him to pull the guy out there and "so-kewl" his pink ass. Cindy tells them to wait, recognizing a dragon painting on the wall. They're by on of her dad's labs. She excitedly tells Jakeem that she thinks he did it, telling the idiots to follow her. Jakeem is happily to have done it, but Mike wonders what he did exactly.
Pat arrives at The Pit Stop to find Zeek shaking his head while looking at a dismantled S.T.R.I.P.E. whose parts are everywhere. The man just walked in and then went flying off like a witch on a broomstick. Pat remarks that Sylvester's lost his mind, but Zeek isn't so sure. He has something to run by Dugan. Maybe, just maybe, Sylvester is doing to Pat when he did to Little Dugan when Eclipso was prancing around Blue Valley. Pat can't remember what he did, so Zeek explains further. He told Mike to meet him when S.T.R.I.P.E. was fixed, knowing good and well it wouldn't be. He lied to protect him. Pat realizes Sylvester's lying to protect him now. He'd rather they hate him than have them get hurt. Which means Sylvester's going to get himself killed. Pat tells Zeek to grab that wrench has he's gotta move face. Zeek tells him to hold up. He's as fast as they come, but putting old Humpty Dumpty together here is going to take more than a few minutes. Pat understands that, but he has an idea. Zeek realizes what he means and nods.
Courtney, Beth, and Yolanda prepare to leave the Whitmore-Dugan House to find Rick. Barbara asks them to call her when they do, leaving herself. Courtney opens the kitchen door to find Rick on the other side. He tearfully needs their help.
Stripesy, holding a flamethrower, approaches the Mahkent Residence. The front door is ajar and he pushes it open the rest of the way to walk inside. The house is empty.
Mike realizes they're in one of Cindy's dad's creepy labs. Jakeem echoes the very creepy statement. He asks what they're looking for, assuming it's a potion. Mike scoffs that Dragon King's not a wizard. Jakeem defends his belief as there was a wizard in the ISA, and Mike admits there was. Cindy nervously tells the boys that someone's been working in there. She nudges a half-open book as proof. Mike thought she said her dad was dead. She admits he's supposed to be.
Pat walks up the steps of the Mahkent residence, readying himself as he rounds the corner. He pushes open Cameron's bedroom door, though the room is empty. Starman pulls him back into the hall, angrily questioning why he's there. Stripesy knows what he's doing - saying what he said, taking out S.T.R.I.P.E., but he's not letting him do it alone. Sylvester states this is his fight, but Pat doesn't think it has to be. The reason Sylvester was brought back from the dead was to fight another man back from the death. To avenge the JSA, to fix his mistakes. He's the reason the JSA died. They should have come back instead of him. So if he dies making things right than he dies. Pat doesn't want him to say that. Sylvester believes this is his destiny, but Pat thinks it's his destiny too, than. Sylvester is Pat's friend, his partner, and he's not letting him do this alone, and that's it. After a moment, Sylvester starts to talk about everything he said back there. Pat knows and tells him to forget it, as they have to do this. The two walk down the hall, passing the Mahkent family crest.
Jakeem pokes at a jar with eyeballs in it. Mike swats his hand away as he might catch what Cindy has. She hears him and Jakeem scolds Mike, asking what's the matter with him. Mike tries to justify it but Jakeem doesn't let up. Cindy looks around the lab until she finds a body covered in a white sheet. Mike turns on the overhead light. Cindy carefully pulls back the sheet, revealing Dragon King's body. The smell gags the trio, but Cindy shakes it off. It's her dad's body. She pulls off his hood to reveal the top of his head is cut off and his brain is missing. Heavy footsteps shake the lair as a huge albino gorilla emerges from the hall. He greets Cindy as his daughter, revealing himself to be Shiro Ito/Dragon King. She's in shock as she looks at her dad. Mike questions his identity. Cindy realizes he put his brain in that thing. Mike puts the pieces together; if Dragon King put his lizard brain in the white ape, he wonders where the Ultra-Humanite's brain is.
Stripesy opens the door to the Mahkent living room. Behind him, Starman stands, scars showing from just beyond his hairline. He strikes Stripesy over the head with the staff, knocking him out. He stands by the body as Jordan emerges from the side. He asks what they do now. Ultra-Humanite smirks that he'll take care of him. He smiles as this will be fun.
Dragon King grumbles lowly that he's missed Cindy, his greatest experiment - well, until now. Cindy tells Mike and Jakeem to be ready to run, so they sneak aside. Cindy tells her father that the new look is not an improvement. He snarls angrily and approaches her, so she throws one of the jars at him. It explodes giving the trio time to run away as Dragon King's left stunned.
Meanwhile, the JSA convenes in Courtney's living room. Yolanda thinks he should take the hourglass off. Barbara offers to help him manage the pain if it hurts. Beth thinks her mom can help. He asks about Ultra-Humanite and Jordan, as they need him powered up. Courtney assures him they just need him healthy. He shakes his head, asking where Sylvester is, as he might know what to do. He knew about the limiter. He told him how to take it off, which surprises everyone. Beth did some reading. His father went through the same thing once and the JSA helped him through it. Courtney notes that Sylvester would know the dangers of the limiter, with Beth confirming Starman was there. If he was there, he knew what it would do to Rick. They question why he would tell Rick to remove it.
Pat wakes up in the woods surrounded by dirt. He's in a grave with his arms restrained behind his body. Ultra-Humanite stands above the grave. He commands an upset Cosmo to be stop it now. He commands it to power down and it does. Pat asks how he controls the staff, and Ultra-Humanite smirks that he's Starman. Well, he's Starman now. As Dolores Winters said in "The Confidence Game", he's been had, kiddo. He laughs and picks up a shovel, throwing dirt into the grave on top of Pat. Pat puts the pieces together, realizing he's the Ultra-Humanite. He asks about Sylvester. Humanite reveals that Dr. McNider was right about the cosmic energy preserving the body, but Sylvester's brain is long gone. He reminisces about having so much fun together in the old days. Star-Spangled Kid and Stripesy alongside the Seven Soldiers of Victory. Pat asks what the hell he's talking about. Ultra-Humanite knows he remembers. After Ted gave "him" the staff, it was Starman and the JSA. Those are the big leagues. Now, Starman and S.T.R.I.P.E. - they made a real team again, and these were great times. He's sad they won't have that anymore because, as he emotionally says, Pat's his friend, his brother. He's sorry it has to end like this. Pat shakes his head and he's not Sylvester. Humanite chuckles and snaps out of the emotion, realizing he's right. Sometimes he just gets lost in the role and just forgets. He shovels more dirt into the grave, including over his face. Pat shouts out for him wait a second, to hold, stop it, as he doesn't have to do this. He talks to Sylvester, telling him he's his friend. Humanite nods as that's right, and Pat smiles a little. So it doesn't have to happen like this. He asks "Sylvester" to help him out of there. Humanite nods and puts the shovel down He crouches down by the hole as Pat encourages him to just grab onto him, remind him that he can do it. Humanite struggles for a moment then smiles, as that was good, really good. Pat almost had him there. He chuckles as he goes back to the dirt. Pat remarks that he's insane. Humanite knows and throws more dirt in the hole.
He looks at the sky. It's a beautiful night. For decades, he enjoyed being in that beast that's been roaming these woods. Just the raw strength helped him survive the JSA attacks, one after the other. But being in that monster, he had to stay hidden. He grew tired of hiding. He missed the adulation that Dolores Winters got. He wanted that again. He knows Jordan and Dr. Ito may have other plans, but for me, that's what this is all about. So after the operation, he did some traveling. He did he research. He shovels as he remembers talking to almost everyone Pat knew, from his landlord in Van Nuys, to Mike's mom at the diner. When he finally made my way to Pat , he was more than ready to play that role. He was accepted back so quickly because everyone worshipped Starman, especially Pat. But he had to cement that acceptance. So he made him a victim with the help of some friends. He recalls landing in a clearing where Jordan and Ito, who is in the gorilla body, are standing. That's when he was attacked outside of Sharpe's trailer by Ito. Now, Humanite reveals that Pat brought him into the circle of trust. Pat brought him closer to Courtney, and more importantly, to his ultimate prize, the Staff. He remembers standing in the basement of the Whitmore-Dugan house when Courtney decides to share the staff with "Sylvester". It drifts towards him and he holds it. Now, Humanite admits he not only bonded with all of them, he bonded with it. Thanks to Courtney, the bond with the Staff is now complete.
At the same time, he had to make sure Courtney's friends stayed out of his way because if anyone saw through his disguise, it would be Cindy Burman. So he used Yolanda to push her away. He recalls talking to her in the diner and telling her that the way she won't let Dragon King's kid off the hook is very Ted. It's good judgment. He flashes to talking with Rick, Beth, and Yolanda in The Pit Stop, where he urged Beth to cut off her parents to keep her distracted. He tells Beth that the first rule he has is protect the family. Humanite chuckles over Rick, as he's Rex Tyler's angry little brute. They all know what Rex went through before he set a limiter on that hourglass. He would hate to be Rick right now - he must be in a world of pain. Finally, Pat's son. He told Mike to go prove he could do what Pat said he couldn't. Humanite put Mike and his inept friend with the pen in harm's way. That worked out great. It all worked out, and so will the rest of their plan. He asks if Pat wants to hear Jordan's endgame, but silence follows. He calls out for Pat and than looks down at the grave, which is full. He says bye to Pat and walks away, leaving the unmarked grave.

Notes and Trivia[]
- With ten words, this is the series longest episode title.
- This is the first episode to feature a character's full civilian name, and the first to feature Sylvester Pemberton in the title. Previously, several characters' super aliases were used in episode titles.
- The flashback in the beginning of the episode most likely takes place in the 1930s or early 1940s. The microphone that Mr. Colman and Dolores Winters use is a 1930s Shure Brothers standing microphone.
- Mr. Colman, the man who presents Dolores with her award, is a character in the DC Comics. The character was an actor and civils rights activist who portrayed the fictional character Detective Nathaniel Dusk in the late 1930s or early 1940s.
- Ironically, Carver was killed by his mother bashing his head in with the award he'd won for his part in Lover's Die at Dusk, which is the same fate King Standish suffers in this episode at the hands of Ultra-Humanite.
- His fictional film Lover's Die at Dusk is seen on the marquee of the Dallas Theater throughout Season 3.
- The man Ultra-Humanite kills in the beginning of the episode, King Standish, is a character from the DC Comics. Set in the 1940s, he went by "The King" and "Man of 1000 Faces" was a master of disguise who wanted to fight crime. He used disguises and deception to fight crime. He was also a member of the All-Star Squadron. He was a friend of the Justice Society of America and worked with sidekicks Stripesy and Sandy when their primary heroes, Star Spangled Kid and Sandman, were knocked out.
- The flier that Dolores gives Ito is of "Congo Bill".
- In the DC Comics, Congo Bill is a superhero who became a globe-trotting adventurer who grew content in Africa, swearing to protect it from harm. His witch-doctor friend Chief Kawolo gave him a magic ring that would transfer Bill's consciousness into the body of the legendary Golden Gorilla. He decides to use his new powers to fight crime in the jungle as the hero Congorilla. He later teams up with Starman and a full-time member of the Justice League.
- Congo Bill was adapted into a 15-chapter movie serial by Columbia Pictures in 1948.
- The character has been associated with the Ultra-Humanite in the past, as Congo Bill appears in a Young Justice tie-in comic book series as a gorilla deity who escapes experimentations by the Brain and Ultra-Humanite.
- It was revealed in this episode that Sylvester Pemberton did die by Icicle's hand the night that the ISA massacred the original JSA.
- Although Sylvester's body was preserved because of the cosmic energy from the staff, Sylvester's mind did not survive. This fact is refuted in the next episode, "Chapter Thirteen: The Reckoning".
- This is the second episode to feature Rick's house. It was last seen in the Season 1 episode, "Hourman and Dr. Mid-Nite".
- There were many flashbacks in this episode to previously aired ones.
- "Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. Part Two", when the Ultra-Humanite, disguised as Sylvester, visits Pat's landlord in Van Nuys looking for Pat.
- "Summer School: Chapter One", shows Ultra-Humanite, disguised as Sylvester, visiting Maggie Shaw and asking about her ex-husband Pat Dugan.
- "Chapter One: The Murder", shows Courtney's suggestion to share Cosmo and Ultra-Humanite holding the staff after it floats to him.
- "Chapter Three: The Blackmail", when Ultra-Humanite and Yolanda discuss her not letting up on Cindy. This solidifies Yolanda's belief that Cindy shouldn't get a second chance.
- Two scenes from "Chapter Five: The Thief" appear. First, when "Sylvester" tells Beth that his number one rule is to protect the family, which makes her push her parents away. The second flashback shows Rick removing the limiter from the hourglass as a result of "Sylvester's" advice. The actual conversation between them isn't shown, though Humanite's voiceover covers the overall context of the conversation.
