Buddy

Buddy is a recurring character in The CW and DC Universe series Stargirl.

Buddy is an English bulldog and the loyal pet of Mike Dugan and Pat Dugan. He later moves to Blue Valley with them, where he becomes the shared pet of the Dugan-Whitmore's. He has a good judge of character and usually likes everyone, including Justin and Beth.

Biography[]

Buddy lived with his owner, Pat Dugan, and Pat's son Mike, in California. They moved around a lot in the past but seemingly settled in California after Pat met Barbara Whitmore. When Pat and Barbara married, Buddy gained new owners, Barbara and Courtney Whitmore. The new blended family moved from California to Blue Valley, Nebraska.

Series[]

Season 1[]

Buddy, along with his owners Pat and Mike Dugan, relocated from California to Blue Valley, Nebraska. He gained two additional owners in Barbara Whitmore and her teenage daughter Courtney. Buddy made the road trip with the family, and was rather active in the back seat, much to Courtney's chagrin.^[1]

On the second night in the new house, Buddy startled Pat when he emerged from the top of the steps in the middle of the night. Pat sat on the steps and patted Buddy happily. He told the dog they had a fight to prepare for. The next day, Pat diligently tried to get his robotic armor to work properly. Buddy watched Pat in The Pit Stop and as he administered first aid.^[2]

Two days later, Barbara came home from work to find Mike home alone. She asked if he fed Buddy, and the teen held up a bag of chips. Buddy emerged from the corner with his muzzle coated in chip dust.^[3]

On Halloween, Mike scared Courtney awake in a mask and then left her room. Buddy eagerly licked at Courtney's face as he stood on the side of her bed. Courtney tried to push the dog off to no avail. Barbara came in to chastise her for not being ready. She picked up Courtney's clothes off the ground and put them in the closet, not noticing her Stargirl suit. Nervous, Courtney jumped out the bed and grabbed the next pile of clothes from her floor. With her back to the closet, Barbara didn't see Buddy grab the Stargirl suit, but Courtney did. When Barbara left, Courtney shooed Buddy out of the closet. She decided to move her suit and duffel bag that had JSA memorabilia.

Beth Chapel visited the home that afternoon in the hopes of talking to Courtney. She sat on the couch to wait and noticed Buddy, in a devil costume. He chewed on a pair of goggles. She tried to ask if the dog should chew those, but no one answered. She followed him upstairs where she took the goggles from him.^[4]

Physical Appearance[]

Buddy is a stocky bulldog with white fur. His left leg has a large brown patch of fur on it that is also present over his right eye. He has lingering brown patches under his left eye. His muzzle is white with a tinge of red present around his lips. He has a black nose. He wears a black collar with a blue bone-shaped tag with his name engraved on the blue metal.

Notes and Trivia[]

Buddy has so far chewed on two pieces of JSA artifacts, Stargirl's boot and Dr. Mid-Nite's goggles.
Buddy has only growled at one character in the series, Sam Kurtis, who is the absentee neglectful father of Courtney. This shows that he is loyal towards his co-owners, the Whitmore's.
Buddy was previously advertised and called Max in Season 1.

Comic Comparisons[]

In the comics, his name is Patton. He was found and adopted by Mike Dugan when he moved with his father Pat Dugan in Blue Valley. Patton resembled that of a pit bull but was most likely a mixed-breed due to being a stray.
