Bruce Gordon is a minor guest character in The CW series, Stargirl.

Bruce is a traveler and explorer who rose to fame after his trip to Diablo Island, which resulted in the discovery of a lost civilization. He had secretly found a great power inside a Black Diamond. What started as a way to earn fame and riches, led Bruce to become a host for the demon Eclipso.

Biography[]

Bruce was a struggling explorer who somehow rediscovered the lost civilization of Diablo Island in his adult years. When he arrived, everyone had been dead for decades. He found a powerful gem called The Black Diamond and feel victim to the evil entity within - Eclipso. Bruce brought the diamond back to the states with him and used the power of the diamond to achieved wealth and fame. He became obsessed and reliant on the power to the point where he couldn't put the diamond down.

Bruce felt guilty for the deaths Eclipso had committed while in his possession, and sought to end his own life. He was instead manipulated into relinquishing control of his body to Eclipso. As the new host, Eclipso had access to all of Bruce's appearances, including his ten-year-old self.

Eclipso used the form to kill the ten-year-old Rebecca McNider, start a war with the Justice Society of America, and commit other heinous acts. The JSA were advised by The Shade to kill Bruce as the death of the host would force Eclipso back in the diamond. The JSA did kill Bruce, though the act drove the team apart.

Bruce's legacy as an explorer lived on, as he wrote many books about Diablo Island and was the only person who ever returned from the hellish place.

Series[]

While doing research regarding Diablo Island and the black diamond. Courtney Whitmore and Beth Chapel explain through maps and books that the diamond itself is from Diablo Island, a now-forgotten island in the Pacific Ocean, that was removed from maps by 1832, as those who visited never returned. According to legend, there were two waring tribes living on either side of the island. One tribe summoned an evil entity of vengeance trapping it inside the black diamond, which Courtney believes is also Eclipso. Rick Tyler wonders how the diamond came to Blue Valley, with Courtney stating that an explorer named Bruce Gordon rediscovered Diablo Island, but when he arrived everyone had been dead for decades. He wrote many books about the island and was the only person who ever returned. She hopes to find books written by him in the used bookstore.[1]

Decades ago, Bruce Gordon drinks and wishes he had never brought the black diamond from the island. The black diamond ruined his family and friends. Eclipso, trapped in the diamond, tells Bruce that those were his own choices. Bruce throws his glass down to the floor and yells at the being to leave him alone. If Bruce wanted the demon to leave him alone, he should put the diamond down. Eclipso figures that Bruce can't let go of the power. Torn over his choices, Bruce takes a revolver out of his drawer and contemplates using it.

Eclipso tells Bruce that he's there for him, and to let Mona go. He can get her back, and her husband is the only thing that stands between the couple. Once the husband is gone, Mona will be Bruce's forever. Bruce knows he won't kill the husband. Eclipso urges Bruce to let Eclipso take control and kill the man for him. He encourages Bruce to lower the gun, and when he does, energy shoots out of the diamond and transforms Bruce into Eclipso.

The Justice Society of America target Eclipso as punishment for killing Rebecca McNider. Pat learns that the only way to trap Eclipso back in the diamond is to kill his host, the human Bruce Gordon. The JSA is split over whether or not to kill an innocent instead of saving him. The vote ultimately goes in favor of killing him.[2]
